Israel saw the great work that the Lord did against the Egyptians. So the people feared the Lord and believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses. – Exodus 14: 31
Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. – John 14: 12
The contrast is simple. Israel saw what the Lord did and believed. Marvelous. Jesus told his disciples the ones who believe in him will also do what he did and even greater works. Wonderful. Old Testament faith and New Testament faith.
In the OT, the hearers of the word were told to believe in the God of their ancestors and obey the commands. In the NT, the hearers were told if they believe in the source of grace for all, you’d do as he did because that’s how he did it.
There’s truth in believing like those of yesterday. There’s resurrection power today in believing like Jesus did. God is real and can be trusted. In Christ, he’s entrusted to us his breath (his Spirit) and his power to destroy the works of the devil.
What a life we’ve been given to honor yesterday and take advantage of today.
